For Our Patients
Test Preparations
For the convenience of our patients, we have attempted to give a brief summary of what you will need to do if you are having tests which have been ordered by your physician. If you have any questions about these instructions, please phone our office at 317-923-7211 or, alternatively, contact the facility where your test will be performed.
Bowel Prep with Antibiotics
The following are basic instructions to cleanse your system prior to any bowel or rectal surgery. These instructions may vary slightly among the physicians and specific instructions will be given to you when you schedule your surgery. Please call the office at 317-923-7211 should you have any questions regarding this prep.
Please obtain, from your pharmacy, the HalfLytely Bowel Prep Kit and any antibiotics that have been prescribed to you by your surgeon.
This prep will begin at 8:00am the day prior to your surgery.
1. DO NOT eat food or drink milk on the day of the prep. Drink clear liquids only. (Please see diet recommendations/restrictions listed below)
2. At 8:00am take BOTH Bisacodyl tablets with water (contained in your kit).
(Do not crush or chew the tablets. Do not take these tablets within one hour of taking an antacid.)
3. Mix the Solution: Add drinking water to the top line on the bottle. Cap the bottle and shake to dissolve the powder. The mixed solution will be clear and colorless. The solution may be refrigerated, but should be used within 48 hours of reconstitution. No other ingredients (other than the flavor packs provided in the kit) should be added to the solution.
4. A bowel movement will usually occur within 1-6 hours of taking the tablets. When the bowel movement occurs drink 1 (8oz) glass every 10 minutes until the solution is gone. (About 8 glasses)
If a bowel movement has not occurred with in 6 hours, begin drinking the solution anyway. You should begin drinking no later 2pm.
A watery bowel movement should begin in approximately 1 hour. You will continue to have these loose bowel movements 1-2 hours after you finish the solution.
5. Begin taking the antibiotics also prescribed to you by your surgeon. Doses should be taken at 4pm, 5pm and 11pm.
**You may discontinue the antibiotics if nausea develops.**
6. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to procedure. (Daily medications may be taken with a small sip of water unless directed otherwise by your surgeon)
